Abstract
Abstract
Objective:This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy on hope and resilience in children with cancer.
Methodology:This semi-experimental research used a pre-test–post-test design with a control group. The statistical sample consisted of 30 children (15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group) aged 5 to 8 years who were referred to Hazrat Ali Asghar Children's Hospital in Tehran in 2024. The instruments used were the Snyder Children's Hope Scale and the SEARS Social-Emotional Assets and Resilience Scales. The experimental group received twelve 45-minute sessions of child-centered play therapy, while the control group received no intervention. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA).
Findings:The results indicated that child-centered play therapy significantly increased levels of hope (p<0.05) and resilience (p<0.05) in children with cancer. The intervention effect size was stronger for hope (η² = 0.445) than for resilience (η² = 0.198).
Discussion and Conclusion:The findings suggest that child-centered play therapy can be considered an effective intervention for enhancing hope and resilience in children with cancer. By providing a safe space for emotional expression and promoting positive interactions, this intervention can help children better cope with the challenges of illness and improve their quality of life.
