Abstract
Objective: A history of complex trauma in childhood can lead to significant psychological effects in adulthood, the most important of which are difficulties in emotional regulation and low tolerance in subsequent relationships. The aim of the present study is to provide a deep understanding of the effects of complex trauma on Iranian clients.
Research methodology: The research design is a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test design with a control group and a two-month follow-up. For this purpose, clients with a history of complex trauma (emotional and physical neglect and emotional, physical and sexual abuse) were selected from clients visited at the Kish Health Center in 1402. To estimate the sample size, the Cohen table was used, with an effect size of 0.5, power of 0.8 and α=5%. The sample size was estimated in three groups. Among the eligible subjects, 36 subjects were selected and randomly assigned to two experimental groups and a control group (experiment 1, experiment 2, and control group). There were 12 subjects in each group, and first, the emotion regulation difficulty questionnaire was administered to all three groups. Then, experimental group 1 received 10 90-minute sessions of emotion-focused therapy protocol, and experimental group 2 received 10 90-minute sessions of spiritual psychotherapy protocol. The control group did not receive any training. After completing the courses, a post-test questionnaire was administered to all three groups.
Findings: The results of the study showed that emotion-focused therapy is more effective than integrated spiritual therapy on the difficulty in regulating emotions in people with complex trauma, and the effect of the interventions was still maintained in the follow-up phase (p<0.01).
Conclusion: It can be concluded that emotion-focused therapy and integrated spiritual therapy are effective on the difficulty in regulating emotions in people with complex trauma.
